AArmo: Early birds again!
Wentermute: Yes.
AArmo: How are you?
Wentermute: Okay.
Sati Space: Hello All
AArmo: Hi Sati!
Wentermute: Hi, Sati.
AArmo: Went: You & Susalena chatted last night...I think you helped her.
AArmo: She sounded better afterwards.
Wentermute: Yes? Well, being a Bodhisattva, I can't help but try. ;)
AArmo: She needs it. Poor thing. She's really hurt.

OnlineHost: *** You are in "Lobby 56". ***

OnlineHost: *** You are in "buddhist chat". ***
OnlineHost:
AArmo: Welcome back Wenter.
Wentermute: Got kicked off-line.
Sati Space: Well It is a common childhood virus that effects the bronchioles,
so her breathing
Sati Space: was very labored and loud
Sati Space: How do you get kicked off
AArmo: Oh, I hate respiratory viruses, their poor little bodies.
Wentermute: I have a defective (re obsolete) modem that does that every so
often.
Sati Space: Usually occurs with children under 2
AArmo: My daughter never had it. And I thought she had everything!
AArmo: Do you use a humidifier?
AArmo: I always use one...every night.
Sati Space: I see, I just Bought a new 14,400 modem, because I was having
major problems
Sati Space: We have a humidifier in the house
Wentermute: Mine is a 14.4K baud, but it has an obsolete chip set that causes
upload errors.
AArmo: Whenever mine is down, my daughter gets sick..when I use it she
doesn't.
Sati Space: Went do you have problems with e-mail
Wentermute: Hey, snarkyman.
AArmo: Evening Snarky. :[
SnarkyMan: hello. Went, AArmo, Sati
Sati Space: AArmo we have learned so it runs all the time
Sati Space: Hi Snarky, please excuse my spelling tonight, I do not know what
the problem is
Wentermute: So is Ray showing up, or what?
Sati Space: I do not know
SnarkyMan: Is the topic "problems responding to E-Mail?"
Wentermute: It was supposed to be Death and rebirth, I think.
SnarkyMan: Ah, death. My favorite topic....
Wentermute: Hi, nong.
Nong: greetings all
Sati Space: Hello nong
Nong: are we all meditating... it is so quiet
Sati Space: Is anyone afraid to die?
Nong: i have been thinking of this a lot lately
SnarkyMan: ::points gun at head:: Bam, bam, bam.
Sati Space: go on Nong
Nong: and i truley think i can look at it with humor
Wentermute: Fear of death? Well, my ego is afraid to die. But that has
little to do with my body.
SnarkyMan: cut off the head, and the body dies too.
Nong: the subcon does not die
AArmo: We're all dying every moment.
Wentermute: Sibcon? In what context?
Wentermute: Subconscious, I mean
Sati Space: I always thought when you die you are worm food and never had a
problem with that
Nong: reincarnation
Sati Space: but, I have found other people shall I say primarily Xtians have
a great fear of death so
Wentermute: Nong: I think that is tacitly admitting to some sort of
continuing soul, which refutes anat
Wentermute: man
Wentermute: .
SnarkyMan: Feel free to refute anatman, Went.
Nong: read abook called Mind Probe Hypnosis....by Irene Hickman
Sati Space: they holdonto the belief in heaven and being with your loved ones
in another plane
Wentermute: anatman equals no-soul. Why would I want to refute it?
Nong: how do you define anatman
SnarkyMan: Went: Feel free also not to refute it. I am anti-authoritarian.
Sati Space: Shambhala Sun had intresting articles in the March edition on
Death
Wentermute: anatman is the principle of buddhism which refutes the hindu
belief that we have a soul...
Wentermute: which transmigrates and carries karma, et al.
Wentermute: from life to life.
Nong: thank you Went
SnarkyMan: But Wenter, you also don't believe in a cosmic soul. Is that
right??
Wentermute: In buddhism nothing has any special self-nature; that is, does
not exist independant of ...
Wentermute: anything else.
Wentermute: Cosmic soul? Define that, please.
Nong: but in many countries Buddhists believe in continuation...at least
where i am from
SnarkyMan: Enlightenment is not anialation. It is the recognition that we
are all the same shameless,
SnarkyMan: fearless, ubiquitous consciousness of the universe.
Wentermute: Nong: Yes, I know.
Sati Space: Everything is a part of the process of continuity
Nong: that is what i have come to believe
Wentermute: Snarky: I think your getting at the One (re dharma-kaya, Tao,
God, etc.), no?
Wentermute: Nong: Well, I am suspect of buddhist rebirth. I think it was an
expedient means teaching.
SnarkyMan: Screw God. I'm not into the "historical confirmation."
Nong: i do admire your detachment Went
SnarkyMan: It is just, Went, that I can't accept nihilism. There is a show
going on. Something is goi
Wentermute: Snarky: Well, I'm talking mystic, non-dual, non-antropomorphic
god.
SnarkyMan: ng on. There is consciousness.
Wentermute: Snarky: What's all this about nihilism, I don't advocate
nihilism!
Nong: hello
Nong: lotus
SnarkyMan: Mystic, non-dual, non-anthropromorphic, YES. God, No.
LotusB5: Good evening folks.
AArmo: Hi Lotus.
Sati Space: Snark How is Continuity Nihilistic
SnarkyMan: What happens after you die, Wenter?
LotusB5: God with the right definition fits the scenario, it's just that the
Christians got it wrong.
Wentermute: Sanrky: I return to the greater whole.
SnarkyMan: is ther cosciousness?
Wentermute: Which is what I was to begin with.
AArmo: Why did you leave in the first place Went?
Nong: only one life here WEnt?
LotusB5: Snarky, no consciousness, just returning to the great sea of life.
Wentermute: AArmo: My body differentiated physically in my mother's womb.
AArmo: Then what is life Lotus?
Wentermute: Sbnarky: Consciousness is the funstioning of the brain.
SnarkyMan: life isn"t conscious??
AArmo: So your coming here was involuntary?
LotusB5: Nong, yes, only one life in all of universe on all planes of
existence.
Wentermute: Nong: In thisa form yes, one life. But what I am made of goes
on the contribute to others.
Sati Space: Snarky No consciousness , But no one has EVER observed anything
disappear completely
AArmo: So you are reincarnated in a sense, Went...just not in the sam FORM.
Wentermute: AArmo: Last I checked.
LotusB5: The physical form is merely the finite differentiation of the Tao,
life force, whatever.
Wentermute: AArmo: In the sense that my actions (karma) and material go on
to contribute to others, yes
Wentermute: But there is no essential ME and goes off and tkes up another
body.
SnarkyMan: Sati: EGO is a dynamic. It can disappear, if we let it. Cosmic
Consciousness is inviable.
AArmo: That's all reincarnation is to me, a different body can be a different
form.
Sati Space: I believe you come back, but you come back as part of the whole
process
Wentermute: No soul.
AArmo: So we only have to let it today, Snarky, not kill it?
SnarkyMan: I don't object to "KILL" the damn ego. You have to be willing to
strangle it.
Wentermute: Snarky: Who is killing what, though?
AArmo: Went: no guarantees on being human again...you could be a gnat or
something...
LotusB5: Snarky, why do you struggle with your ego so much?
AArmo: depending on your karma...
Wentermute: AArmo: *I'm* not going to be anything!!
AArmo: Lotus...because he's got a special one...he can see it.
SnarkyMan: The ego participates in its own destruction. Who gets rid of your
ego, Went?
AArmo: Went: I didn't say I .... I said you. What are you anyway??
Wentermute: All I am is the particular config of matter, energy, and
consciousness.
AArmo: So you could be configured differently next time.
LotusB5: AA: explain what you mean by he can see it.
SteveTec: Went, those all might be saying the same thing.
Wentermute: AArmo: But WHAT is configured next time?
SnarkyMan: hey, stevo.
Sati Space: Well I disagree tend to be more cynical Snarky, I think that
whole Ego thang is ....
AArmo: Snarky has an incredible ability to see his ego.
LotusB5: Hi Steve!
AArmo: Meaning: identify it when it is around.
SnarkyMan: ::i use mirrors::
LotusB5: Snarky, thanks.
Wentermute: Snarky: The ego is an illusion. There nothing to destroy but
the POV.
Sati Space: Wenter I agree Totally
AArmo: Went: your matter is.
SteveTec: Hi. all. Interesting how you all have talked about reincarnation in
connection w/ death.
SnarkyMan: ok. VG, went. I agree with that. But an illusion or an mirage
is "real"
AArmo: Are all perceptions real?
Wentermute: AArmo: My matter is scatter all over the place. Or do you think
my corpse is getting up
SteveTec: Rather than just death. Seems a bit hopeful somehow.
Wentermute: walking around again?
SnarkyMan: typical, steve. We all want to jump back into life.
AArmo: No, your matter = my matter. Cosmic matter if you will.
Sati Space: Yes Wenter!!!!!
Wentermute: Sanrk: The illusion is real because we take it to be so, yes.
SnarkyMan: yes, went.
AArmo: OTHER Religions need to personify these things. Buddhism doesn't just
because..
AArmo: it is believed that you can be the same species again.
Wentermute: AArmo: So, there's no actually connection between one
manifestation or the next?
LotusB5: Yes, life is life regardless of form.
AArmo: No connection and complete connection.
LotusB5: Yes AA.
AArmo: Ever changing.
LotusB5: Like waves on the ocean.
AArmo: Beautiful Lotus.
LotusB5: :)
SteveTec: Like those little balls on strings that smack into each other...
Wentermute: Nothing which is essential to YOU continues -- what you think is
YOU is just a bag of water.
Wentermute: when you die it bursts and goes all over the place.
Wentermute: End of You.
SnarkyMan: "Nihilism"
AArmo: Beautiful Went. But it goes somewhere no?
Wentermute: It goes into everything else.
Wentermute: What this nihilism thing, Snark?
AArmo: It gets incarnated again?
SnarkyMan: I s "everything else" as pointless as "you?"
LotusB5: Life is like the ocean itself. The waves are the manifestation of
its essence. But waves themselves...
Wentermute: Parts here, parts there, relatively speaking, AArmo.
Sati Space: Goodnight All, my ego is feeling left out of the conversation, so
I shall seek conversation
LotusB5: have no separate self-essence from the ocean.
Wentermute: Snark: Um ....
AArmo: Sorry Sati!
AArmo: But we are all waves for a while.
SteveTec: From what has been taught death isn't regarded as a problem. But we
seem to have one.
Wentermute: Snark: What "point" are you looking for?
AArmo: We have a problem with death if we are attached to life.
SnarkyMan: {why was Sati upset} ::whimper::
SnarkyMan: Love, Wenter. You seem to leave no room for a point. Love is the
point.
Wentermute: AArmo: Right, but "we" don't come back.
SnarkyMan: Love and Truth are beautiful. They have there own meaning.
Wentermute: Snark: Yes.
SteveTec: We don't regard death as something special, an ending. It is for
west something to hide.
AArmo: We never leave Wenter
SnarkyMan: there=their
Wentermute: AArmo: EXACTLY!!!! Not come, not going. Tathagata.
AArmo: Hey it's agree with wenter night!! Again!
SnarkyMan: Wenter: You stink!
AArmo: :::sniff sniff:::
SteveTec: Actually, it would be nice to die, reincarnation seems to be the
holdup.
SnarkyMan: see?
Wentermute: I do? Must have forgotten the deordint.
AArmo: Snarky...you wouldn't be happy if I always agreed with you would you?
Wentermute: Snarky: How does anatman refute love and truth?
SteveTec: Most important, more important is the moment before death. How we
are right then.
Haiku17: Will Ray be here tonight? or am i in the wrong buddhist chat?
Wentermute: Steve: That sounds a bit too catholic to me.
AArmo: Is there a wrong Buddhist Chat?
LotusB5: Right place, but Ray not here.
Wentermute: Haiku17: It doesn't look like it.
SnarkyMan: never. I thrive on dispute. But the "bag of water" is a denial
of meaning, Went.
SteveTec: Fear of death is very catholic.
AArmo: Once in a while he has a conflict with another meeting.
LotusB5: Steve, the most important moment is the one we're in.
Wentermute: Snark: Huh?
AArmo: At the moment of death...death is a moment away. Who knows what'll
happen?
LotusB5: We return to the sea of life.
Wentermute: Snark: Look, all there is is now/here. Why do you need an
essential soul to flit about to
Wentermute: be loving and truthful.
SteveTec: The moment before death is what we work on in this life, it is a
very honest moment.
Wentermute: Steve: okay. Yes, it is the moment of dissolution, when reality
imposes its last, immutabl
Wentermute: e will upon us.
SnarkyMan: I dont "need" an essential soul, Went. I am totally open to where
(I belive) truth leads me
LotusB5: Steve, what I work on is to be *in* every moment of life.
SteveTec: Or, Went when we freak out.
AArmo: Every/Any moment could be the moment of death.
Wentermute: Snark: So what IS your problem with what I'm saying?
LotusB5: Every/any moment is the moment of birth and death.
AArmo: Unless we are enlightened Lotus.
AArmo: Does the moment of death count more than any other moment?
SnarkyMan: I belive that the Ego is not your whole being. You stop fearing
and feeling shame, you are
LotusB5: In that case, then there is no real birth or death.
SnarkyMan: free to be enlightened. Everything. INCLUDING yourself.
Wentermute: Yes ... I don;t recall refuting that, Snark.
SnarkyMan: You are free to be everything, including yourself.
LotusB5: Yes Snarky.
LotusB5: Especially oneself.
SteveTec: It is the moment where we have no second chance, AA.
AArmo: But I understand that the state of mind at the moment of death has a
profound impact...
AArmo: in the bardo :0
AArmo: That word scares me a bit.
Wentermute: "the bardo" . :p
LotusB5: Not anymore than any other moment.
SteveTec: It might carry into the 'next' bardo, though this is the bardo as
well.
LotusB5: Every moment is the middle of eternity.
AArmo: I don't know. There is the ability to be completely non-attached.
Rare opportunity.
Wentermute: Lotus: :)
LotusB5: :)
SnarkyMan: yes, Lotus. There are no walls around NOW.
SteveTec: It seems from consciousness' point of view a lot could occur Very
quickly.
LotusB5: Non attachment is the ability to let things come and go as they will
without clinging to them.
LotusB5: YEA, SNARKY
DALLILAMA: tashi delek
AArmo: Gazunheit Dalli
SnarkyMan: Somehow it seems "better" to be unattached when the attachments
are most attractive.
LotusB5: Greetings.
Wentermute: Snarky: So why bother with flirting with reincarnation?
Reincarnation is just the ego want
Wentermute: ing to continue.
AArmo: Continuation is necessary...until suffering ends.
SnarkyMan: I'm not a proponent of reincarnation.
AArmo: But not of the ego.
DALLILAMA: possibly
LotusB5: AA: continuation of What?
Wentermute: AArmo: Suffering ends when continuation ends.
DALLILAMA: dose any one rember
AArmo: Continuation of now
SnarkyMan: I just dont think life is a Pass/Fail test.
SteveTec: AA, it does seem that confusion will recreat itself if unresolved
at any remaining point.
LotusB5: Now always just IS.
Wentermute: AA: No, continuation with this thing you call "ME".
AArmo: Can confusion be resolved?
LotusB5: Yes AA.
AArmo: But me is all of us Wenter?
LotusB5: Snarky, you are quite correct.
SteveTec: Not by grasping at concepts, AA.
AArmo: It's that cosmic thing..
DALLILAMA: cathollic theology 101
AArmo: What concept?
Wentermute: AA: Bit is that what you THINK you are?
AArmo: I am. That's enough.
SnarkyMan: So, Lotus. If there is only one life, then you MUST get
enlightenment, or you fail. (?)
AArmo: We are..that's enough.
SteveTec: If somebody holds onto a 'me' there's a 'me' too.
AArmo: Who's holding?
LotusB5: Snarky, it is NOT one lifetime, only ONE life source.
Wentermute: AA: I mean, have you seen IT, or are you just regrugitated
intellectual gobblity-gook.
AArmo: No, I haven't seen it. I think this is where faith comes in.
DALLILAMA: time
AArmo: Didn't mean to regurgitate on you...sorry Went
SteveTec: Someone must be, I seem to be here.
Haiku17: space
Wentermute: AA: Then, you still believe you are something seperate. This is
what ceases to continue.
SnarkyMan: We are all players on a stage, Steve.
DALLILAMA: reality check
AArmo: No, I don't. I am an extension of you and everyone else.
AArmo: I is all I have to describe my part.
Haiku17: i dig
Wentermute: AA: Oh, you are a tathagata.
AArmo: A regurgitating one.
Wentermute: :D
LotusB5: Steve, a temporary material apparition with a brain that thinks
there is an "I", is what you are...
LotusB5: refering to.
Haiku17: I and I
DALLILAMA: tathagata ????
Wentermute: AA: There is a profound difference between intellectual thinking
and experiencing.
Wentermute: Dalli: One who gone beyond = Buddha.
SteveTec: From our PTV, there is mind first as container for brain.
AArmo: Not for me...once reality bites I'm bitten.
Haiku17: Gone, gone, gone beyond...
DALLILAMA: i am looking for Mara
AArmo: I find no need to argue the truth.
SnarkyMan: Beautiful, Steve. I think some diregard the mind.
DALLILAMA: Wentermute thank you
LotusB5: Steve, there is brain which is container for mind.
Haiku17: thought is in the brain, mind is in the heart
SteveTec: Dalli, on who is TATHATA. Lotus, no mind then we can see no brain.
Wentermute: AA: Oh? What truth might that be?
AArmo: That we all exist.
Wentermute: AA: Oh, jeez. You just lost the Buddha-badge.
SnarkyMan: s'okey. I re-deputize her.
AArmo: Am I supposed to be disappointed...am I damned now?
Wentermute: :D
LotusB5: AA: are you refering to temporary existence in corporeal form?
AArmo: I'm not in it for the badge.
Haiku17: what the diff re: emptiness vs. nihilism??
SteveTec: AA, relatively we do 'seem' to exist. But the more we look at that
the harder to define.
AArmo: I'm in it for us all.
SnarkyMan: Badges? Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!
Wentermute: AA: It is as mistaken to speak of existence as it is to speak of
non-existence.
LotusB5: LOL Snarky!!!!!
Haiku17: Hey man, i EARNED these badges, back off!
AArmo: I understand Judge Went. Let me not be forsaken for existence.
Wentermute: Judge? Judge? Where, where?
SteveTec: Emptiness is and nihilism is cling to a concept of it.
Haiku17: thats a nice one, steve.
AArmo: How say mistaken??? How do YOU know??
Wentermute: AA: I died once.
Haiku17: See ya.
LotusB5: Bye Haiku.
SteveTec: Bye?, Hiaku.
AArmo: You died, and you remember it...and that means you came back..no?
LotusB5: Come again.
Wentermute: AA: Its called non-dualism.
Wentermute: AA: Sort of ... that's one of those book-length explanations.
Haiku17: bye all... (remember the days when there would be 20 of us at a time
- where did we go??)
AArmo: Oh. So to come back means you are here, no?
LotusB5: Only the hard core remain Haiku.
AArmo: Or that you were?
AArmo: Or that you will be?
LotusB5: AA: you are too stuck on words.
Haiku17: gate, gate
Wentermute: AA: The body didn't die, just the idea of a soul, a mind, some
essense-thing. I fell into
Wentermute: the Void, once.
AArmo: I'm not stuck. I'd like to communicate online without'em though.
LotusB5: Hi Yocco.
Wentermute: Took awhile to dry off, ;)
Yocco: hello again lotus
SteveTec: The person who was you as a child, are you still them? [Rhetorical
question], Went.
AArmo: How do you know?
LotusB5: AA Who are you asking?
Wentermute: Steve: The child died a couple trillion times a second.
AArmo: I'm asking how Went knows he was in the void.
SteveTec: And, what's left now?
Wentermute: But always got rebron, you see.
LotusB5: He experienced it.
AArmo: So to experience means he existed? I'm really lost.
SnarkyMan: When you see your original face, Went. who/what do you see?
Wentermute: This thing here is left.
Wentermute: Snarky: No-one.
AArmo: Not everyone Went?
LotusB5: Snarky, I just see the essence of life itself.
Wentermute: Every-one, no-one, same-o-same-o.
AArmo: What's an original face anyway?
SteveTec: Death, moment to moment is very connected to memories. But we can't
really remember the past
LotusB5: The living principle at work in the universe.
AArmo: Did you have plastic surgery Went?
Wentermute: AA: What you were before you were born.
Wentermute: AA: HUH?
SnarkyMan: AA. To me, it is an absense of shame, fear, ego. Love remains.
AArmo: Okay, so I was something...that means I existed no?
SteveTec: We only remember th highlights, like an abridged version of
reality.
AArmo: Your original face is what you really are...without human affects.
Wentermute: Steve: Yes. But each moment changes who we are, kills who was,
continues the existence-
SnarkyMan: I agree with that AA.
Wentermute: to-be of who we will be.
LotusB5: AA: you were not a "you", the only thing there is is life itself
made manifest in a physical form.
AArmo: Beautiful Snarky..as usual.
Wentermute: AA: Who is "I"?
AArmo: I am this part of all of us.
Yocco: your body is your temple...every act is meditation
AArmo: Is this an oral exam? Didn't I answer that before?
Wentermute: AA: You didn't answer the Q: Who is I?
AArmo: I am this part of us.
AArmo: Not my physical manifestation...
Wentermute: AA: YES, but who is the I that is part of us all???
AArmo: not my mind...
AArmo: not my "soul"...
SteveTec: Since I cannot fathom the depths of my own misunderstanding, how
can hope to change yours.
AArmo: not my "self"...
LotusB5: Folks, there is a difference here between conventional designations
and ultimate reality.
AArmo: Not my ego..
AArmo: I am a wave in the tide of us all..
Wentermute: AA: Okay.
AArmo: for now anyway :)
Yocco: one's false ego of himself is his ultimate downfall and strength.
SnarkyMan: Yoc, all egos are false, and it is never a strength.
Wentermute: Yocco: "False" ego?
AArmo: So you see, I am not differentiated from anyone else...
Yocco: you can't be lead by your false impressions of a specific reality.
LotusB5: Right on Snarkster!!!
AArmo: the English concept of I is misunderstood as self oriented I think.
Yocco: i.e. yourself or the world around you
AArmo: Hey Ray!
Ray N6VZN: Hi
LotusB5: Hi Ray!
Wentermute: AA: Yes, but have you experienced this. There is a difference
between saying it and being
Wentermute: it.
SteveTec: Hello, Ray.
Wentermute: ARay, you decided to show.
SnarkyMan: Ray mundo. My man!
Ray N6VZN: Radio Club meeting over....took me 20 min to log on, busy
AArmo: Was that a question Went?
Wentermute: AA: I think it was originally.
AArmo: Yes, this is my experience with this life.
SteveTec: [Ray, AOL is having some real problem with their telnet lines
tonight]
Wentermute: AA: I don;t think you understand, but its okay.
AArmo: It is okay to not understand?
Wentermute: AA: Sure.
AArmo: No way.
AArmo: Explain please.
LotusB5: AA: it is okay not to understand, as long as keeps trying to.
Wentermute: AA: Do you think there is something wrong with it?
SteveTec: How can we know for sure, AA. We are finding out as usual.
SnarkyMan: Went: Do you think that some people go into the void and believe
it to be God's grace?...
AArmo: Yes, but it sounds as if I'm missing something obvious.
SnarkyMan: or have they failed to go into the void?
Yocco: if you understand everything then why bother trying anything
Wentermute: Snark: How would I know. Never met such a person. Seems
possible though.
AArmo: I don't understand much of anything...except what is true to me.
SnarkyMan: Can my Cosmic Consciousness by your Void??
SnarkyMan: by = be
SteveTec: It's awful to consider all the things people could believe.
Yocco: truth is a matter of the ability to accept things for what they are
LotusB5: Snark: There are those Christians who believe it is God's grace, but
they are changed from the event
Wentermute: AA: That's all that matters, as long as you continue to push the
limits of that truth.
Wentermute: Snark: I don't know.
Wentermute: Could be.
AArmo: But I'm troubled that you think I'm not seeing the truth now.
SnarkyMan: Yes, Lotus. It bothers me that it seems possible to append a
label to an enlightening exper
SnarkyMan: ience.
Wentermute: AA: You can be, I don't know really. I just didn't think you
were getting the difference
SteveTec: But when death approaches the real doubt has plenty of room.
Wentermute: between thinking and experienceing something.
Yocco: my truth or your truth? there are as many points of view as there are
stars in the sky
Yocco: is there on ultimate truth?
AArmo: I am not so advanced that thinking about something will make it
true...
AArmo: I must experience it to truly believe.
Wentermute: Yocco: Last I checked.
LotusB5: Yocco, yes there is.
Yocco: explain, please
SnarkyMan: yep. My vote's for Ultimate Truth.
Wentermute: AA: [I hate to ask but...] Have you had a satori?
AArmo: What's that?
SteveTec: LOL/SM.
SnarkyMan: ...I had an orgasm once.
Zen7: it seems quiet tonight. Only seven people?
AArmo: SNARKY!
Yocco: if i did you'd be in disgust. if i didn't....you'd be in disgust
Wentermute: AA: Direct experience of reality, seeing the buddha-nature,
fusion with dharma-kaya, etc.
SnarkyMan: ::blushes::
AArmo: Only seven..hardly quiet.
LotusB5: Down Snarky Down! Keep it in your pants man!
SteveTec: I think I did, SM, but I can't fully remember it.
SnarkyMan: Zen7. Greetings. Howdy.
TaoAndNow: Good evening all
AArmo: Oh, I thought it was a drink with a lot of caffeine.
Zen7: what's up snarkman?
TaoAndNow: Dropped by for a meditation
SnarkyMan: Grrrrrr Zen7
Wentermute: AA: Oh, jeez. Nit a zenner, huh?
Zen7: grrrrr?
Zen7: snarkwoman?
SnarkyMan: "What's up" Grrrrrr
Zen7: ?
AArmo: Me...no? Not a zenner.
Wentermute: Hi, TaoAndNow.
Zen7: Did I miss something?
SteveTec: :).
Wentermute: AA: Satori is Japanese Zen term for enlightenment experience.
Zen7: what's up is bad?
Zen7: "bad"?
Wentermute: Snarky does a dog routine, Zen 7.
AArmo: Oh...maybe. I only know how the truth feels...
LotusB5: Zen: what's this question of snarkwoman.
SnarkyMan: grrrrrrr <--dog-like growls
SteveTec: Good, Zen7, lots of just fun.
AArmo: and my feeling about my part of us all..
Wentermute: Ray, you missed the reincarnation debate. :-)
AArmo: is pretty strong.
Zen7: otay...what ever floats the boat, pero yo no entiendo.
Wentermute: AA: If you had a satori, you'd know it. It's rather
mind-blowing, really/
Zen7: lotus, didn't know why snarkums was growling.
SnarkyMan: i hate being called a perro.
Ray N6VZN: Yep, and was looking forward to it.....oh well
LotusB5: Ah! IC said the blind man.
Zen7: eres un snark
AArmo: Discovering that I am Buddhist was mind blowing.
Wentermute: Ray, I have the log. :-)
Ray N6VZN: I have not experienced satori, but then I just sat with a group
for the first time last nigh
SnarkyMan: Went is blackmailing me again!
SteveTec: AA, it get worse.
Yocco: freeing yourself from your mind is the first step
Wentermute: Snarky: I am?
AArmo: Worse! Can't wait!
Zen7: yocco, how does one free one's self from the mind?
Ray N6VZN: Great Went....are you going to put in file area?
SnarkyMan: Haven't I said things that are incriminating?
Wentermute: I could.
Zen7: blackmail him wentermute
AArmo: Yes, Snarky..the night wouldn't be complete without them.
Yocco: if i knew that i would have been a buddah
Wentermute: Snark: Um. Must have missed it.
Zen7: hmmmmm
Ray N6VZN: Thanks Wentermute, looking forward to reading it
Zen7: this thing about thinking, and that it never permanently goes
away...this whole matter is
Zen7: very complex....
Yocco: i am not an all knowing being so i have to work as hard as everyone
else
SteveTec: Yocco, your definitions are perplexing to me. 'Yourself' from
'your' 'mind'. What you mean?
Yocco: what happens when your
Zen7: do you meditate yocco?
Wentermute: Ray: I usually get here before everyone else. I could start
puttin gthe logs in the lib ..
SnarkyMan: brb. getting cigs.
Wentermute: from now on.
Yocco: "mind" wanders?
Zen7: your mind wanders.
Yocco: yes i make a feeble attempt
Ray N6VZN: That would be great Wentemute, often I get email asking if such a
log could be uploaded
Zen7: it loses attention, then will draws it back to breath
Yocco: you lose track of your thought process and no longer function for a
moment
Zen7: UPLOAD THE BUDDHIST CHAT LOG! I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE! That'd be
cool.
Wentermute: Ray: Might get more people to come check out the chat too.
Yocco: you lose your state of meditation
SteveTec: Do you urinate then, Yocco?
Zen7: yocco, you can't meditate and think at the same time?
Zen7: If you can't then what is behind mind?
Zen7: is "anything"?
Yocco: yes i urinate it exercises body wisdom
Wentermute: Yocco: Meditation is just a way of developing mindfulness.
Yocco: meditation is the way of control
Zen7: control?
Ray N6VZN: Yesterday we did 30 min sitting, 20 min walking then 30 min
sitting...it was disturbing at
SteveTec: Seriously, do you mean become lost from your momentary train of
thought, or perceived..
Wentermute: Yocco: Eww. I don't like that. What are you tring to control?
Why?
Ray N6VZN: first to mediate with others.....breathing tech. really helped
Zen7: I have tried to control, and it doesn't work well for me. It's effects
are only temporary....it seems
Yocco: being your own master is better than a side effect of your mind
SteveTec: outlook of how things are so that the story line drops away for a
moment.
TaoAndNow: "control" ?
Wentermute: Yocco: Who is the "master" who is being "controlled"?
Zen7: but if you suppress the mind, I don't think you are dealing with your
stuff
Yocco: i'm a slow typer give me some time
Zen7: that's cool yocco...
Wentermute: :D
LotusB5: Snarky, you got a bad, bad habit in them thar cigs, but that is like
the pot calling the kettle black.
SnarkyMan: LOTUS!! You, too. You and AArmo are ganging up on me!
Zen7: yocco, if you stir the water, it will always be muddy.
AArmo: Lets get him Lotus!
Wentermute: Lotus is being ahypocite, she smokes too.
Yocco: i agree
Wentermute: :)
Zen7: I am trying to do the mindfulness thing, which isn't really about
control, just
AArmo: LOTUS!!!!!
SnarkyMan: Tao. Is will-power "control?"
Zen7: watching stuff come up and not chasing the thoughts and it seems that I
am starving the
Ray N6VZN: Believe it or not Snarky after about 6 months you really do feel
better :)
LotusB5: Snark, I'm the pot calling the kettle black.
Zen7: thought process, taking away its fuel. After all
Zen7: interest is fuel.
AArmo: Hmmm.....attached to cigs....hmmmm
SnarkyMan: I don't smoke. I am trying to work up a habit.
Wentermute: Controlling is what all us unenlightened folk do: We try to
control everything, but theres
LotusB5: AA: Yes I AM ashamed of my habit.
Yocco: my problem is that i am a day dreamer i have no control. i loose
myself in fantasy
TaoAndNow: hmm......too many words !
Yocco: and forget what is real
Wentermute: nothing to control, it all just does its thing and we are
distressed by this
AArmo: Don't be ashamed!
Wentermute: being out of "control"
Zen7: we all lose ourselves in our thoughts yocco
AArmo: Be mindful!
Wentermute: hence, suffering.
Yocco: and what is fantasy
Zen7: sometimes for longer periods of time than others
LotusB5: AA: Okay, if you absolve me.
TaoAndNow: chaos/control
AArmo: Absolve! Who made me holy!
SteveTec: How can we be out of control if we are aware of this particular
moment?
TaoAndNow: 'the dragon' St. George
Zen7: thoughts will always rise, but there seems to be something that can be
conscious of those thoughts
Zen7: something that can watch fantasies, and be mindful of them
Yocco: am i a prince who dreamed he was a butterfly...or a butterfly who has
dreamped he was a
LotusB5: AA: Aren't we all holy? Don't we all have Buddha nature? ;)
Yocco: prince?
SteveTec: No, Yc, a king who forgot how to be.
AArmo: Define holy, please
Zen7: all things are impermanent and if we don't get caught up in them, we
don't suffer so much
Zen7: I wonder if suffering ever ends....
SnarkyMan: Am I a piece of shit thinking he's a rock or a rock thinking he's
a piece of shit?
Wentermute: Suffering ends, hardship continues though.
Yocco: no it is an ongoing struggle between i and me
Zen7: holy and buddha nature are two "different" things
LotusB5: Holy=to be revered/valued, has intrinsic worth.
Zen7: a piece of shit snark
SteveTec: Zen, it you suffer for a moment it is unbearable. The suffering of
the collective is unblvbl
Wentermute: Snark: :0
LotusB5: Zen, suffering does end.
AArmo: Oh, by that definition yes, we are....but can one person absolve
another?
Zen7: what about the zen story of the holy man whom the birds would come to
every morning and then when
Zen7: he was enlightened they didn't come anymore.
Zen7: Nothing special.
Yocco: there are no ordinary moments
SnarkyMan: [he should get some better birds]
Zen7: stevetec?
SteveTec: Yes, Zen.
LotusB5: AA: It was a joke son! :)
Zen7: Lotus, then what about pain...is it that we don't react...
Wentermute: Suffering is caused by grasping/aversion of things/ideas.
Hardship is just a matter of
Wentermute: having a body.
Zen7: stevetec...elaborate please
AArmo: Wow...I'm missing so much tonight. Can't even get the jokes.
Wentermute: Body has to drink, eat, piss, shit, etc.
AArmo: I guess I'm out of sync.
Wentermute: When doesn't get those things, Hardship.
Yocco: eat sleep mate defend......basic animal traits
Zen7: wentermute, when there is no more mental reaction, does suffering end?
Yocco: can we break free?
SteveTec: Elaborate on being stuck with being genuinely who we and working
with it?
Yocco: become more than animals???
Zen7: we don't break free out of willpower yocco
Wentermute: Zen7: Mental reaction ... mental grasping and aversion -- ame
thing?
LotusB5: AA: Life is so much fun, but not when trying to live it so hard.
Zen7: yocco, what's wrong with being animals?
AArmo: Every moment counts Lotus.
Zen7: it would seem wentermute
Zen7: same coin
Wentermute: Zen: Well, then I would agree.
Yocco: nothing but the modern man thinks its the wors fate possible
Wentermute: Suffering is delusional -- has no real basis of reality, created
by delusional thinking.
LotusB5: AA: But not if it is taken so seriously.
Wentermute: Hardships are just the facts of living in this existence.
Zen7: wentermute: a lot of people think we are dead if we aren't grasping, or
averting...
SteveTec: Actually, we are not just ape like creatures going solely from one
thing to the next.
Yocco: to live life you must have a sense of humor
AArmo: I take everything seriously...but I can laugh and have fun seriously
too.
SnarkyMan: Delusional or not. There IS suffering. Went: You seem to deny
those real delusions.
Wentermute: Zen: A lot of people, then, haven't realized what living is yet.
LotusB5: Enjoy what there is to enjoy, suffer what there is to suffer, regard
both as facts of life.
AArmo: Reality always pervades.
Zen7: what are we stevetec?
Yocco: we are more of apes than what appears
Zen7: I agree wentermute...
Wentermute: Snarky: They are made real by our thinking they are.
Enlightenment cuts the roots of this
Wentermute: delusion.
Zen7: but certainly I don't want to be numb
Zen7: I tried that
Wentermute: Zen: Not about being "numb". Just about expereincing things as
they are.
Zen7: Now I just don't hold on...which can be sad sometimes
SteveTec: We are students who are working to uplift our own and others being
to become who we are.
SnarkyMan: But Went: So you are enlightened. Do you now belive that others'
suffering is "nothing?"
Wentermute: Snarky: there are levels of enlightenment. Just because I've
had a satori doesn't make me
Zen7: snarkster:all things are impermanent, and in that sense suffering is
not real, not lasting...
Wentermute: a buddha.
Zen7: wentermute:what do you mean?
Zen7: what does one have to do to be a Buddha?
Wentermute: Zen7: Have a satori that never ends.
SnarkyMan: Went, I'm NOT making you a Buddha. Do you think the Buddha is
nonchalant with suffering?
Yocco: do you know what enlightenment feels like? how do you know if you've
experienced satori?
Ray N6VZN: Zen, the Buddha said that on the path suffering does not end right
away, but by
Ray N6VZN: practicing the Dharma one reduces suffering
Yocco: or just had a wet dream?
LotusB5: Snarky, absolutely not.
AArmo: I think you just reach plateaus...but are always mindful of where
you've been.
Zen7: so quiet....
Zen7: I can hear myself typing...
Wentermute: Snark: Of course not. Just because you are aware of the
delusional nature of suffering ...
Wentermute: doesn't mean you are not aware of the fact that others think it
is real.
Wentermute: A buddha seeks to point out the delusional nature of suffering to
others.
Wentermute: So that they may "free" themselves of it.
LotusB5: Excellent, excellent Wenter.
SteveTec: What we might think is enlightenment or satori is just another
memory. It is not experience.
Zen7: can one have a satori that never ends?
SnarkyMan: Went. It IS real. I have a problem with the concept of dismissal
of problems, delusional o
SnarkyMan: r not.
Zen7: all things are impermanent....
Wentermute: Zen: If you are always experiencing things directly, you can.
LotusB5: Zen, but it takes a lot of practice.
Zen7: so then if I experience something directly, does that mean I have had
satori?
Ray N6VZN: Is delusional the right word, is not ignorance better?
SteveTec: Went, when do we know we are? Usually we stop and go oh yes, I was
doing that wasn't I?
Zen7: Lotus, it doesn't take lots of practice.
Zen7: I don't think.
Zen7: I think its luck
LotusB5: Zen, a satori is when *experiences* the ulitmate reality.
SnarkyMan: the concept of "ignorance" IS better, Ray.
Zen7: like the guy who was hell of young who read the lotus sutra and
whammo!!!
Wentermute: But mind gets in thw ay of everyone else's experience of reality,
hence they are not buddhas
Zen7: lotus...what is ultimate reality? something not here?
AArmo: What experiences reality if not the mind?
Wentermute: I'm not meaning delusional as in schizo, just in terms that we
are distorting direct reality
Wentermute: with conceptualizations.
SteveTec: Reality and mind are impossible to separate, AA.
Zen7: wentermute...what makes thee think thou has had satori? I am just
curious, so that
Zen7: I know we are talking about the same thing....
SnarkyMan: Right on, AArmo. There is a cosmic consciousness that experiences
the satori.
Zen7: what is mind aarmo?
Wentermute: Well, how on earth can I describe it? Give me a minute.
AArmo: Oh, I get it...wow...
Zen7: don't describe wentermute
AArmo: I actually understood something..hmmm
Zen7: I was just curious, if you had had the chance to talk with other roshis
and
Wentermute: Well, what do you want then. This is a frigging on-line caht!
Zen7: be kind of "validated"
LotusB5: I have letters from a few people who have had a satori if anyone is
interested. Including my own.
Zen7: for what that is worth
Wentermute: Oh, okay. Haven't done that yet.
AArmo: I wouldn't know a satori if it fell on me.
Zen7: I was just curious wentermute, because there are certainly many modes
of experience
Wentermute: AA: You will when it does. :)
AArmo: And frankly, don't care to either. I just want the truth.
Yocco: how do you describe satori? its like describing colours to a blindman
Wentermute: Zen: yes.
Zen7: I have had some fucking trippy shit happen to me, but I don't think it
was satori....
SnarkyMan: It would fall on you, AArmo. And you WILL know.
Wentermute: AA: That's what a satori is.
LotusB5: AA: don't be too sure you wouldn;t know it.
AArmo: So we've all had one...we're here, no?
AArmo: We've all found a bit of truth no?
Yocco: is life satori? ...or death?
SnarkyMan: no. You will ABSOLUTELY KNOW if you have the BIG BAM BOOM.
Yocco: what is thee ultimate state of conciousness?
SteveTec: AA, who is keeping score. Resting on experience is like pointing to
a photo & saying is you.
AArmo: Honestly, I don't even think about enlightenment...
Wentermute: AA: A satori is the DIRECT experience, NOT intellectual thought.
LotusB5: WOW Snarky, I'd guess YOU'VE had one eh?
Wentermute: AA: That's good, don't worry about it.
AArmo: I just try my best to behave and exist in my part here.
Ray N6VZN: Sounds sort of like fishing.....at my progress level I am happy if
counting is happening and
Ray N6VZN: I am not counting...only happens for a few moments untill I
realize it
Tifaifai: Hello.... I know nothing about Buddist thought but I have a
question
AArmo: Go for it Tif
SteveTec: Shoot, Tf.
Tifaifai: If one is Buddhist... and married... is divorce allowed or
prohibited
Yocco: we're all ears
SnarkyMan: It was sort of like that orgasm, lotus.
Yocco: what do you think?
SteveTec: Its actually likely.
AArmo: How can one who has found the truth be so growly then Snarky?
Tifaifai: Catholics prohibit... how about Buddhists ?
LotusB5: :-O Snark,I thought you put it back in your pants.
AArmo: Shouldn't you be peaceful?
Ray N6VZN: Satori, did it occure while counting breathing, or another tech.
or does tech matter?
SnarkyMan: It didn't "stick." It was satori lite.
LotusB5: Tif, no prohibition in Buddhism for divorce.
AArmo: Lol
SteveTec: Tif, it is so common that its more of the norm than the exception.
Ray N6VZN: satori lite..... :) great
Wentermute: Ray: Satoris can happen in any circumstances.
Yocco: tif, if you can live with and accept the affects then why not...if you
can't...then why?
Tifaifai: Thanks... I was wondering about that for awhile...I meant really
practicing buddhits.. thanks guys
AArmo: I should think divorce would be considered non attachment, no?
SteveTec: Not finding that last beer in the fridge could be satori.
SnarkyMan: LOL, AA.
AArmo: Wow, I made you laugh Snarky...wow!
SnarkyMan: YES, STEVO!! Take that, AArmo.
LotusB5: Snarky, just how old are you anyway?
SnarkyMan: 40
LotusB5: You got 4 years on me.
AArmo: 11 on me :)
SnarkyMan: geeeez
AArmo: I can blame youth for my ignorance.
Yocco: we're still lost aren't we all?
LotusB5: Not me Yocco.
SnarkyMan: Amazing grace. I was lost, but now I'm found.
AArmo: So Lotus knows the way....follow her!
Yocco: how can you be so sure?
SteveTec: It's a big ocean, Yocco. Dharma is the lifering in the middle of it
somewhere.
AArmo: Let's leave popcorn for the others to find!
LotusB5: Impossible to explain.
Ray N6VZN: I have a dumb question.....Do any of you feel bad about killing
insects?
SnarkyMan: Certainty is the amazing part of it.
AArmo: I never never never kill anything Ray...even bugs.
Yocco: if you have found the light at the end of the tunnel....you'd better
hope its not a train
AArmo: My family thinks I'm wacked.
Zen7: there is no death, there is no life ray
SnarkyMan: We're not hindus, Ray.
LotusB5: Ray, I kill them all the time, mostly flies though.
AArmo: I read a wonderful tale...
AArmo: about a Monk who slept with one leg out of a mosquito net..
SnarkyMan: ...and a dog bit it off?
Zen7: I'm serious ray
AArmo: he used the net so that he didn't inadvertantly kill the bugs...
SteveTec: It is worse to kill them when you've vowed not to. But we all do
unintentionally, Ray.
AArmo: and he left his leg out so they didn't go hungry...
AArmo: I love that story.
SnarkyMan: I think the bugs should havefelt bad about sucking on the leg.
Yocco: then he died of lyme disease
AArmo: LOL
SteveTec: Malaria, Yc.
Zen7: If the lion didn't kill the wildebeest, the virus would or the bacteria
would
AArmo: The bugs must survive...do you feel bad about eating Lettuce Snarky?
Yocco: (that was a joke)
Zen7: and if they didn't kill it, then starvation would
Zen7: death happens.
Yocco: cows scream louder than carrots
SnarkyMan: I would never eat a lettuce. Vegetables are my friends.
SteveTec: Just think of the dust mite who get everytime we scratch or vaccum
the house.
AArmo: LOL
LotusB5: Does that make you a vegetable Snarky?
AArmo: You are too much! What about the grains in your beer...
SnarkyMan: That's by excuse for never vacuuming.
AArmo: or the tobacco plants you inhale!
Ray N6VZN: Yea Steve I sort of feel that way...and it bothers me a bit to
kill bugs in the house...dont
SnarkyMan: I leave the grain. Suck up the alcohol, only.
AArmo: LOL
Yocco: life feeds on life
SteveTec: Many Buddhists don't eat fish since it has so many parasites that
get killed too.
LotusB5: Wenter must be IMing.
Ray N6VZN: Its the mental intention that is important, Buddha said accidental
killing unavoidable
Yocco: i'm fed intraveniously
AArmo: So you don't kill bugs Ray?
Ray N6VZN: No, AArmo, thats the problem I run a home for developmental
disabled I cant allow bugs
Ray N6VZN: in house.....remove them when I can....
AArmo: Oh, tough conflict.
SteveTec: One problem with killing bugs is it leaves a mess behind or is
horrible to see.
Ray N6VZN: To think I use to hunt doves.........worked up some bad karma
there
Yocco: murderer!
Ray N6VZN: yep....but I did eat what I killed.......
NOMADICL: hello fellow lotus im of the nomadic lotus
AArmo: We all hunted in one life or another.
Wentermute: Yes, I am Iming, Lotus.
SteveTec: I shot a bird with a BB gun as a child. It was so awful. Even
though it probably didn't die.
Yocco: so now your body is a graveyard
Zen7: ray...fear is a big issue when it comes to bugs, at least for me
LotusB5: Hello, Nomad.
NOMADICL: hello
Ray N6VZN: Yes Zen, that can especially be applied to nice things like
spiders
AArmo: I live in the country...and constantly deal with road kill..I cry
every time I see it.
AArmo: They hunt right behind my house...So I bought a Doberman to scare'em
away!
SteveTec: We can also use that as an opportunity to see how our mind is when
we do hurt bugs.
AArmo: It worked!
NOMADICL: are you trying to decide wether it is wrong to kill bugs and
animals
Ray N6VZN: But hunting also taught me how to live in nature....become part of
surroundings...nice to
SnarkyMan: night all. i'm off to do my housecleaning. (all around the bugs
and rats)
Ray N6VZN: use that skill to enjoy
Yocco: well its past yocco's bed time. maybe ill see some ome form east coast
in the philly zendo.
Zen7: ray, I had a spider crawl over me today, with big fangs.
SteveTec: We should also respect basic sanitation though and not spread
disease. Nite, SM.
Zen7: I used to have arachnaphobia so bad I couldn't touch a picture of
spiders
AArmo: I simply cannot kill anything. I don't have it in me. I'd let the
spider bite me.
LotusB5: G'night Snarkster, if you must go, I bid you adieu.
Yocco: bye!!!!!
Ray N6VZN: By Yocco...are you on the mailing list for the Chat ?
Zen7: I have deconditioned myself through exposure
LotusB5: Bye Yocco.
Yocco: no sign me up its been an enlightening experience!
Ray N6VZN: ok will do....have a good week Yocco..
Yocco: (maybe even satori?)
Wentermute: Hah, and I've got the log of it!!
Ray N6VZN: Thats great AA
Yocco: love you all...goodnight!
LotusB5: Next week then.
SteveTec: Ooh, it's late on the EST. Time to go. Thanks everyone. Goodnight.
AArmo: I really overreact I'm afraid. So much so that now my daughter is
reacting as well...
NOMADICL: if a bug is biting you it is doing you harm push it away if it
continues to bite kill it
AArmo: she cries if she sees anything dead.
AArmo: Just like Mom.
AArmo: I was this way before Buddhism too!
LotusB5: Namaste Steve.
AArmo: Ciao Steve
Ray N6VZN: Wait....wait...how about a topic for next week
Zen7: later dude
NOMADICL: then cry and except that what you do has consicuences without then
no existance
NOMADICL: accept excuse me
AArmo: I accept my feelings...they are real.
Wentermute: Ray: How about mediation techniques as a toppic?
Wentermute: Froms of, goals of, etc.
AArmo: Didn't we do that already?
Zen7: what's up with the log being uploaded?
Ray N6VZN: Went we sort of try that last week, we really did not get into
tech a lot...perhaps you
Ray N6VZN: could lead a brief discussion on various tech before general
discussion....we got pullled
Ray N6VZN: off point
LotusB5: Do we really need a topic?
AArmo: It seems when there is noone leading the topics we never stick to them
Wentermute: LOtus: It helps some.
Wentermute: Ray: That's an idea.
Ray N6VZN: AA I think that the compassion you have is just as imporant as
experiencing satori in
Zen7: the mind wanders alot....
Ray N6VZN: meditation....as they say you need both wings strong to fly
AArmo: But what amazes me is that the feelings are innate almost.. I did
nothing...
Zen7: we get to watch it ramble with our typing
Ray N6VZN: Ok Went., if you are willing could you do that for us?
AArmo: no practicing on it or anything..
AArmo: I've been like this since I was very very young...
Wentermute: Ray: Yeah. I can give it a shot.
AArmo: I used to sit outside for hours..
AArmo: and let stray cats sleep in my coat...
Ray N6VZN: Ok, I will send you some email monday to remind you...thanks
AArmo: when I was like 7.
LotusB5: AA/Ray, compassion is the path that leads to enlightenment.
Wentermute: Ray: Okay.
NOMADICL: goodbye
AArmo: Is that compassion?
LotusB5: Bye Nomad.
AArmo: Bye Nomadicl
A Comic 1: Hi all
AArmo: Hi Comic!
LotusB5: OOOOOHHH! Comic, my man!
Ray N6VZN: Hi Comic
A Comic 1: Hi Ray
AArmo: OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMM
AArmo: I love silence.
A Comic 1: What's the topic?
AArmo: Our most recent one was saying hello to you.
Ray N6VZN: Comic it was Buddhism and Death...Went is going to upload the
discussion in the libary
Ray N6VZN: area
A Comic 1: Death as in the bardo?
AArmo: My eyes are crossing...I've got to be in work in like five
hours...Will see you next week!
AArmo: Nice Chatting all!
Zen7: bardo?
LotusB5: Goodnight AA: take care.
Ray N6VZN: Yes, I also got on late so missed the discussion
Ray N6VZN: By AA, have a good week
Zen7: a tibetan buddhist?
Zen7: or a reader of the book of the dead?
Ray N6VZN: There were some good articles on Death/dieing in this months
Shambhala Sun Mag
Zen7: I haven't read it yet.
Zen7: sitting on my floor.
Zen7: it is sitting on my floor.
Ray N6VZN: Last month's was the first time I read it, did not really
understand the space devoted to
Zen7: that was what I was talking about ray, when I said there is no life,
there is no death.
Ray N6VZN: the interview...this months is much better
LotusB5: What is bardo anyway?
Ray N6VZN: I have not come to a decision yet where Buddhism will lead me on
Death....just not
Ray N6VZN: sure....
Zen7: did you guys see all the talks about spirituality?
Zen7: lots of rooms
Ray N6VZN: In-Between....."space between" death and rebirth...my

A Comic 1: Lotus.....bardo is the Buddhist concept of death......not death in
the tradition sense but the the
A Comic 1: in=between.....life and deeath.
Wentermute: In between? In between WHAT???
Ray N6VZN: There are chances for enlighments, how one reacts to what happens
in bardos is determined
Ray N6VZN: by practice and past karma
A Comic 1: In-between re-births
LotusB5: What is suppose to happen in the bardo?
Wentermute: Comic: Now explain to me please -- what is being reborn?
A Comic 1: Supposedly practice prepares you for bardo (death)
Zen7: ladies and gentlemen, I wanted to say I wish you the best. I'm logging
off so, later.
A Comic 1: The better the death the better the easier and the better re-birth
Zen7: peace be with you.
A Comic 1: Bye Zen
Wentermute: Bye, Zen7. ;)
LotusB5: Bye Zen, come again. Nice having you.
Ray N6VZN: By Zen, see you next week, take care
Wentermute: Comic: You haven't answered the Q.
A Comic 1: What question?
Zen7: _Oo_ online buddhist bow....
Wentermute: What is being reborn?
LotusB5: I like it Zen!!!
A Comic 1: Your tendencies........not a soul, not a thing
Wentermute: "Tendencies?"
Ray N6VZN: Yea thats great _Oo_ have to try to remember that
LotusB5: But Comic, nothing remains of the earthly existence to be reborn.
A Comic 1: Well,that is my understanding.
LotusB5: Is this Tibetan concept?
Wentermute: Seems to me that something would have to carrying these
tendencies on if they are to be a
A Comic 1: Yeah, but I think it is a general Buddhist concept.
Wentermute: continuation of "You".
LotusB5: Well, Comic not in my understanding of Buddhism.
Wentermute: Hmmm ...
Ray N6VZN: Yes it is a general concept......rebirth is a central pricipal
Wentermute: Lotus and Comic just got kicked off, I think.
Ray N6VZN: Not continuation of "you" but your buddha nature in ignorance sort
of....I do not have good
Ray N6VZN: understanding
Ray N6VZN: Yep looks like it....i
Wentermute: I think that the idea of rebirth itself is not a good
understanding.
Ray N6VZN: Went...I do have some trouble with this part of Buddhism....I do
not have any direct
Ray N6VZN: experience of it....but I have no doubt that Buddha taught rebirth
and that karma would
Ray N6VZN: act over many lifetimes.....
Ray N6VZN: It seems to be mentioned too often in the sutras to be only
"expiedent means"
Wentermute: Yes, he did teach it. But remember expedient means, etc.
LotusB5: Ray, only as an expedient means to lead the Hindus to the one
vehicle.
Ray N6VZN: Lotus, is there anything in the sutras that would lead you to that
conclusion?
Wentermute: Remeber also that he was teaching hindus who'd had the idea of
reincarnation beat into them
LotusB5: The Lotus Sutra itself.
Ryokan 1: Hello everyone.
Wentermute: Ray: A way I see it is this -- when a person becomes
enlightened, they escape birth-and-dea
Wentermute: th, no?
LotusB5: Also Ray, once you've had a satori, the teachings themselves become
so clear, they are transparent.
Ray N6VZN: Yes, I think that is so Went.
LotusB5: Hi Ryokan.
Wentermute: Now, birth-and-death is life suffering, it is a delusion that is
wiped away upon enlightenme
LotusB5: Ray, there is a consistency in all the Buddha's teachings, but one
can only see it after you
LotusB5: get his point.
Ray N6VZN: it is wrong understanding yes
Wentermute: There is no essential reality to birth-and-death, otherwise
buddhas would be subject to it.
Ray N6VZN: yes Went, I am with you so far
Wentermute: When the buddha taught this, I believe he was thining, "These
hindus believe in rebirth, so
Wentermute: when they realize what I have, they will see that this is false."
LotusB5: O excellent Wenter, it is just as you say.
Ryokan 1: But do not attach to the Buddha, either.
Wentermute: But, of course, until then, they THINK that it is real, to thm,
like suffering is.
Ray N6VZN: So Went. what is not reborn, what is not subject to birth and
death....and if only our
Ray N6VZN: delusion stops us from knowing it what happens when we die and not
enlightened...does that
Ray N6VZN: which is not subect to birth or death die?
LotusB5: Ryokan, you are correct.
LotusB5: No ray
Wentermute: Well, if a person overdoses on LSD and believes he can fly and
jumps off a building, does he
Wentermute: fly or fall?
Ryokan 1: He falls.
Ray N6VZN: but LSD is not buddha nature
Ryokan 1: He had already fallen when he first took the drug.
LotusB5: Ray, how can something that is not subject to birth and death, die?
Wentermute: Delusional reality does not equal actual reality.
Ray N6VZN: Right Lotus...so what happens to "that" when the body dies?
Wentermute: LSD is the symbol of delusion in the example, Ray.
LotusB5: It returns to the cosmic sea of life.
Wentermute: Or rather, ignorance, since it is creating delusions.
LotusB5: Life is the ocean, the physical beings are like the waves upon the
surface.
Ray N6VZN: Ok, so then why worry about enlightment...we all return to the
cosmic sea...life is short..
Wentermute: Ray: To escape suffering.
Ray N6VZN: is enlightment just to reduce suffering....to see cosmic sea a bit
ahead of time?
Wentermute: Last i checked, that's what's all all -- read the Four Noble
Truths lately?
LotusB5: Enlightenment is to understand the nature of the waves, and its
relation to the sea.
Ray N6VZN: yes....but what makes it so powerful is that ingorance "may" play
this suffering game over
Ray N6VZN: and over
Ryokan 1: And that the relation is the same as the waves to us, Lotus.
Wentermute: Rebirth is a useful expedient, but not to be taken literally,
just as emptiness is not to be
Wentermute: taken as a literal void.
LotusB5: Very good Ryokan.
Wentermute: Otherwise, emptiness would be nihilism.
Ryokan 1: Thank you, Lotus.
LotusB5: Things come, things go, but the essence is the same everywhere at
all times.
Ryokan 1: Sitting quietly, doing nothing. Spring comes...
Wentermute: Ray: The whole problem with literal rebirth, fundementally, is
that is supposed that we are
Wentermute: actually seperate from everything else.
Ray N6VZN: If everyone after one life...within this life...reaches the comic
sea unpon death does not
Wentermute: This is the defintiion of ignorance, but not of reality.
Ray N6VZN: the Bohisattva vow become sort of silly, since you will become
enlighened on death anyway
Ray N6VZN: Why vow not to attain enlighment untill everyone does....everyone
does in one life anyway
Wentermute: Enlightedned upon death? Bodhisattva vows will still lead you to
teach and help others in
Wentermute: this existence, ray.
LotusB5: I mean no offense Ray, but you are asking a silly question. And
Wenter is correct.
Taishi: hello all
Wentermute: Hello, Taishi.
Ray N6VZN: Why vow to put off enlightment?
LotusB5: Hi Taishi.
LotusB5: Ray, it is not literal.
Wentermute: Ray: Remeber too that our actions in this life create karma that
effect the lives of others
Wentermute: so ...
Taishi: are we talking of kannon?
LotusB5: No Taishi.
Ray N6VZN: Yes, for sure.....and for others to come even within this
lifetime...I agree
Wentermute: If we create karma which tends to enlighten others, we will leave
that wind behind when
LotusB5: We are talking about the nature of enlightenment.
Wentermute: we do die, and that will contribute to the world after us.
Wentermute: So, it DOES matter, what we do.
LotusB5: Yes. Yes.
LotusB5: Again yes.
Ryokan 1: No karma is created where no attachment exists. Helping for the
sake of helping creates
Ryokan 1: no karma
Ray N6VZN: Yes, I would agree with that
Taishi: a riddle: what is the nature of enlightenment?
Wentermute: Take for instance how the cycle violence is perpetuated in the
ghettos because of the bad
Ryokan 1: What is the nature of a frog?
Wentermute: karma pased from one generation to the next.
LotusB5: Taishi, the ability to see correctly.
Ryokan 1: What is correctly, Lotus?
Ray N6VZN: Yes Went. that is the aspect of Karma I know by direct experience
LotusB5: To see reality as it is.
Taishi: why attach to words?
Wentermute: Ryokan: There is such a thing as neither-good-or-bad-karma.
Taishi: to definitions?
Taishi: to dogma?
LotusB5: It is called conventional designations so that we may communicate.
Taishi: [sigh] pardon my foreignness--
Ray N6VZN: The Buddha taugh us to help us achive enlightment, it is important
to leran what he taught
Wentermute: Only full buddhas create no karma for themselves, but there
actions still have consequences
Wentermute: for others.
Ray N6VZN: Taishi
LotusB5: It is difficult to say I love Wenter without words, though the
meaning is far richer and deeper.
Wentermute: Ray: Yes, so that we may make the world we leave behind a little
better. Utter compassion.
Taishi: but i do not understand westerners views of the dharma (be it
praised)
Zircom: Hello
LotusB5: Hello Z
Wentermute: Hi, Zircom.
Ryokan 1: Hello, Zircom.
Taishi: hello
LotusB5: Taishi, neither do I.
Ray N6VZN: Yes Went. I agree with you, but still not certain about rebirth.
Taishi: why must the sangha argue about small specks of dust?
Taishi: be one--be many--but be.
Zircom: I am studying buddism at school and was interested in it, however, I
find some parts very co
Ryokan 1: Well, Awakened Ones, I must be sleeping. Good night, all.
Zircom: nfusing
LotusB5: Tho I was born in the is country I don't understand the western
mind. Mom is Japanese, I was raised
Ray N6VZN: Lotus and Went thank you for helping me with my
understanding...Taishi we have not
LotusB5: Nichiren Buddhist.
Ray N6VZN: been arguing....no anger just trying to understand
LotusB5: Goodnight Ryokan, Oyasumi.
Wentermute: Ray: Well, that's okay. It's a difficult concept. That is why
the buddha did not directly
Taishi: oyasumi [gassho[\]
Ray N6VZN: Good night Ryokan
Wentermute: asseert it to hindus who assume it exists. He knew he'd not get
anywhere.
Ryokan 1: Sleep well.
Zircom: good night
Wentermute: Bye, Ryokan.
Zircom: Can I ask you something?
Wentermute: Sure.
Taishi: lotus--do you see what i mean? many words spent on definition, few
acts spent in living
Zircom: If buddists try to stop wanting, wouldn't their craving for nirvana
be a "sin"?
Wentermute: Taishi: Point well taken. But words themselves can be acts too.
Taishi: no--words are empty. words point at nothing
LotusB5: Taishi, yes I see your point. But for those who seek some must lead.
Taishi: zir--to seek nirvana is attachment of the worst sort
Wentermute: Z: Nrivana does not exist if you are wanting something, wanting
nirvana keeps you from it
Ray N6VZN: Good night all.....see you next week
Wentermute: Bye, Ray. Been good chatting with you.
LotusB5: Namaste Ray.
Taishi: namu amida butsu [gassho]
LotusB5: Z: there is no "sin" in Buddhism.
LotusB5: Taishi, are you Jodo Shinshu?
Zircom: so you live your life without cravings and would then reach nirvana
without craving nirvana
Zircom: its self
Wentermute: Lotus: Well, there are such things as defilements.
Taishi: tendai
LotusB5: Oh!, Me Nichiren, but mostly seeker of truth.
Wentermute: Z: Yes. Nirvana occurs when you end all craving/aversion --
even of the idea of nirvana it
Wentermute: self
Taishi: do not reach, do not think, do not ponder: do. just do.
LotusB5: Taishi, you read Lotus Sutra?
Taishi: [nod] often
Taishi: especially the parables ;-)
Zircom: Would you say the Therevada is the more conservative of the two
subsections of buddhism?
LotusB5: Gassho!
LotusB5: T: parables often very helpful neh?
Wentermute: Theravatans are conservative, yes. They study only the
scriptures of the Buddha's teaching
Taishi: ne. parables are the heart of the dharma
Wentermute: They reject, I think, anything written afterwards.
LotusB5: T along with 2nd, 11th, and 16th chapters.
Zircom: What do Mahayanans study?
Taishi: actually--i like the heart sutra best ;-)
Taishi: short and sweet
Wentermute: Mahayana study the Canonical sutra too, but they also have later
sutras and scriptures of
Wentermute: their own that they study as well.
LotusB5: Taishi, Hokkekyo is most compassionate thing I've ever read.
LotusB5: But it is long.
Wentermute: The Zen school, for instance has many sutras written long after
the indian canons were put
Taishi: what thing is there without compassion?
Wentermute: to paper.
Taishi: zen holds no sutras--
Taishi: zen refuses transmission by the written word--
Wentermute: Um ... then what is the Platform Sutra about then, Taishi?
EJest: parables
Wentermute: Well, OF COURSE, it does.
Wentermute: But they got there own sutras.
LotusB5: Taishi, the Christian Bible for one. Nazism for another.
Zircom: In school, we charactorized buddihsm in two different lights,
Japanese and regular, what is
Zircom: the difference?
Taishi: not a sutra--not a teaching--any follower of zen will tell you that's
absurd--
Wentermute: Japanese and regular?!?
EJest: Is the Christian Bible without compassion?
LotusB5: Most of it is without.
Wentermute: Well, Buddhism is generally broken into Mahayana (Greater
Vehicle) and Hinayana (lesser
Wentermute: vehicle) and Vajrayana.
Taishi: no--anything--everything--has buddha nature within it--
Wentermute: Hinayana is Theravatan and other indian schools.
Wentermute: Mahayana includes Zen and other East Asian schools.
Wentermute: And Vajrayana is mostly Tibetan Buddhism.
EJest: Is Tibetian within Mahayana?
EJest: Ah, OK
Zircom: The story of Izanagi and Izanami, is that Japanese?
Taishi: yes--
Taishi: from the _kojiki_
Zircom: Are there kami in all buddah vehicles?
Wentermute: kami?
LotusB5: Taishi, doko de umaremashita ka?
LotusB5: Kami=gods.
Taishi: ore? new york
LotusB5: Kami is Japanese
Wentermute: Oh!!!! Well, Tibetans getr into that heavily.
Taishi: no vehicle, no kami, no buddha.
Vultureyes: hello
LotusB5: Hiya.
Zircom: HI
Wentermute: But mostly, gods are only symbols in buddhism, not taken to exist
literally.
LotusB5: Sacramento.
Taishi: hello
Vultureyes: illinois
Zircom: Taishi, No Buddah?
Wentermute: Taishi: ;)
Taishi: what difference can be made between symbol and life?
Wentermute: Dirext experience discards all symbols.
Zircom: I don't understand/
Taishi: buddha, no buddha. same thing.
LotusB5: Atashi wa hanbun Nihonjin desu. Nihongo wa daitai hetakuso desu.
Vultureyes: i'm converting to Buddism soon,i go to Temple with my friend
ganita every sunday
Wentermute: Z: In buddhism, non-dualism is a hinge concept -- this means, no
opposites.
Taishi: yes--but the symbol is the reality. take the rose...
Taishi: overcome duality--know the one
Wentermute: For instance, ignorance and enlightenment is a dualism, but in
reality, there is no differnc
Vultureyes: am i to strange for it?
Wentermute: Only in the mind does the differeence exist.
Taishi: why strange?
Vultureyes: i just am
Taishi: [lol] you know the koan about the flag?
LotusB5: Please tell us.
Taishi: two monks were watching a flag flap in the wind--
Vultureyes: it looks like the best way of life but i still have some
questions
Taishi: one said 'the flag is moving'
Wentermute: Vuture: All ears.
Taishi: the other said 'the wind is moving'
WltzngMati: question... aren't "opposites" just considered to be consecutive
points on a circle?
Taishi: zesshu the monk passed by and heard them--
Taishi: and added 'the mind is moving'
Wentermute: Um ... I suppose you might say that. That would show how it is
that they are ultimately
Wentermute: the same.
LotusB5: LOL!!! TAishi
Vultureyes: can i still keep my religion?
LotusB5: Yes.
Wentermute: Religion?
Zircom: I'm sorry, I was reading my book.
Taishi: we missed you
LotusB5: There are even Catholic who practice Buddhism.
Vultureyes: Ganita says i can cause Buddism is a way of life more than it is
a religion
Zircom: Is dualism a part of pureland Buddahism?
Wentermute: Pureland Buddhism -- Ugh. Forget that stuff -- lowest teachings
there are.
Vultureyes: but my friend Yolk(piya)says no
LotusB5: Except to the Tibetans WEnter.
Taishi: why deride members of the sangha?
Wentermute: Try some zen -- that will teach you about non-dualism.
Taishi: why discern between what you call low and high?
Taishi: zen does not teach!!!!!!!!!!zen is!!!!!
Wentermute: Taishi: Not derided sanga -- deriding teaching.
LotusB5: Not members Taishi, the teachings they claim are the Buddha endpoint
are in fact not endpoint.
Wentermute: No zenteachers, only zen, yes -- I know.
Vultureyes: thank you for all your help
Wentermute: I'm using expedients with newbies, Taishi.
Vultureyes: bye bye
Taishi: [shrug] amida leads to light--
Zircom: Taishi, The monks who were in Chicago about a year ago, were they
Zen?
LotusB5: All The Best V!
Taishi: bye [gassho]
Taishi: which? where?
Zircom: At the museum, they were using colored dust to create a drawing
Taishi: dont remember--
Taishi: tibetan, perhpas?
Zircom: IT consisted of 4 walls different colors
Wentermute: Sounds like they might have been.
Zircom: each symbolizing a different spirit?
Zircom: give me a sec let me find the article.
Zircom: It was called the Modola
Wentermute: Mandala?
Zircom: Body= castle
Taishi: anyone here like the yi zhing?
Wentermute: yi zhing?
Zircom: Enlightened Spirit
Taishi: er--i ching, also.
Zircom: Enlightened mind
Zircom: Wisdom
Zircom: Bliss?
Taishi: prajna parmita
Wentermute: Oh, I haven't read it, but I like the Tao Te Ching very much.
WltzngMati: <---new to studying these beliefs
Wentermute: :D
Taishi: dao ge dao fu zheng dao!
Wentermute: Taoism/Ch'an Buddhism forms my path, Taishi.
Taishi: dao ge meng fu zheng dao!
Taishi: [smile] i like that
Wentermute: Taishi: Ah, you politically correct fellow, you!
LotusB5: Translate please Taishi.
Wentermute: That was the new chinese romanization of Tao Te ching.
Wentermute: I think.
Taishi: not very new--just easier to use that wade-giles--
Taishi: 'the way that can be spoken is not the eternal way,
Wentermute: Yes, I prefer the spelling "dao", but everybody always asks me
what that is.
Taishi: the way that can be named is not the eternal way."
Wentermute: Ah yes.
Wentermute: The named is the mother of the ten thousand things.
Taishi: i call it the mysterious female
Wentermute: Mother has fewer syllables in english, ;)
Zircom: Does anyone know who Norito is?
Taishi: shinto prayers--very old ones
Zircom: Or what it is?
Zircom: Shinto?
LotusB5: Don't know.
Wentermute: Shinto -- japanese spirtualism before buddhism, no?
Taishi: but beautiful--they're used at the beginning of noh
plays--shinto--native religion of japan
Taishi: _not_ spiritualism, please!
LotusB5: The mystery of mysteries is the Door of all essence.
WltzngMati: what's wrong with spiritualism?
Wentermute: Spiritualism is my catch-all for religions/theo-philosophies --
no ghosts involved.
Zircom: I have the Great Exorcism Prayer in front of me, what is is used for?
Taishi: perhaps, then--
Taishi: extrication of _mono no ke_--evil spirits
Taishi: L--you know the parable of the gate?
LotusB5: Not right off hand.
LotusB5: I suffer from CRS.
Taishi: it's very sweet.
LotusB5: CRS=can't remember sh*t.
Zircom: is Norito short for nori-to-goto?
Taishi: sakyamuni was preaching in the jetavana garden--
Taishi: and his disciple milarepa came to the garden gate--
Taishi: and sakyamuni called to him, 'enter the garden and join us, my
friend.'--
Taishi: but milarepa did not move--
Taishi: so sakyamuni called to him again--
Taishi: and milarepa answered--'but from where i stand, i _am_ in the garden'
Taishi: [gassho]
Wentermute: Zircom: Might be.
LotusB5: Is sweet ne!
Taishi: Z--very difficult to piece together archaic japanese--could be, bould
not be
LotusB5: Taishi, how is your Nihongo?
Wentermute: Hi, Samara
Taishi: well--strange--if its before 1860, i can read it much better ;-)
Zircom: Gentleman, Thank you for all your help. I hope to talk to you very
soon.
Taishi: hello samara--
Zircom: Spring soon ends-
Zircom: Birds will weep while in
Taishi: may your path be filled with light, Z--
Wentermute: Z: buddhist chats are weds and thurs 10 and 11 PM est
respectively.
Zircom: The eyes of fishe are tears
Zircom: Bye!
LotusB5: Namaste Z.
Wentermute: You are welcome anytime.
Taishi: namu amida butsu
Taishi: ah--the hour comes for sleep--
LotusB5: Taishi, Yoku mireba, nazuna hana saku, kakine kana.
LotusB5: Can you translate "kana" for me please?
Taishi: [clap] i love that one--kana? kireji.
LotusB5: Is kana like and exclamation point?
LotusB5: and=an
Taishi: ...nan de aru na to iu imi...sort of like !
Taishi: i have read too much today--and my eyes are killing me
LotusB5: Oyasumi Taishi. Yoroshiku hajimemashita!
Taishi: iya, kochira koso--oyasumi [gassho]
LotusB5: Gassho._Oo_
Wentermute: Bye, Taishi.
Taishi: leaving?
LotusB5: We thought you were leaving Taishi.
Wentermute: I should be, It slate.
Taishi: in minutes--
Taishi: my eyes are starting to shut--
Wentermute: And I've been on-line since 11!
Taishi: eh!!!!!!!!!
LotusB5: Nennasai Taishisan!
Taishi: so surunnya
Taishi: [gassho] i bid you both peace on the path of your dreams--
Wentermute: Bye, you two. Hpe to see at next weeks's chats, Taishi.
LotusB5: Me too Taishi.
LotusB5: See you next week that is.
Taishi: namu amida butsu namu amida butsu namu amida butsu--his name bears
light--oyasumi T
LotusB5: Well just you and me now Wenter.
Wentermute: A purelander! Shees...at least he knows some zen.
LotusB5: He says he's tendai, but you are right.
LotusB5: Can't fool us with that chant.
Wentermute: Well, I need to go.
LotusB5: But like me, though I'm eclectic, I chant too.
LotusB5: Are you going to answer my IM?
